The cases appear across the country, with four in Syddanmark, three in Nordjylland, three in Midtjylland, two in Sjælland and one in Hovedstaden.

The Statens Serum Institut, working with Denmark’s veterinary and food authorities and the country’s National Food Institute, has not identified the source. Investigators are using whole-genome sequencing and interviews with patients to determine whether the infections share a common food or other exposure. Laboratory analysis found that all 13 bacteria belong to sequence type 19 and remain closely related genetically, a finding that points to a likely common source.

Danish authorities also recorded 26 cases of a different monophasic Salmonella Typhimurium sequence type during May and June. The Danish development comes as several other countries report larger clusters, giving the latest salmonellosis coverage a distinctly international character.

Salmonellosis cases in the UK raise concern over imported eggs

The United Kingdom is dealing with the most serious cluster highlighted in current reporting. British authorities are investigating three Salmonella Enteritidis clusters that together have produced hundreds of confirmed infections and two deaths.

The UK Health Security Agency said the largest cluster had reached 259 confirmed cases and one death as of August 25. The cases include people from younger than one year old to age 90, with a median age of 30. Among patients for whom hospitalization information was available, 41 had required hospital treatment.

Two additional clusters have also expanded. One has 177 confirmed cases in England with no reported deaths, while another has 38 confirmed cases and one death. The British investigation also includes 13 patients in Scotland whose illnesses occurred between April 1 and August 10.

Investigators have identified a recurring link to imported eggs. The cases have been associated particularly with people who ate at small cafés, restaurants and takeaway businesses, rather than with food prepared in their own homes. British officials continue to stress that the investigation remains open and that the precise causes of the clusters have not yet been established.

The UK government says there is no evidence that eggs produced in Britain are involved in the investigation. Food-safety authorities continue to advise that thoroughly cooked eggs, handled hygienically, present a lower risk. As additional cases emerged, officials ordered a wider response, including another recall on August 10, closure of the entire farm and the culling of poultry.

Up to two million potentially contaminated eggs entered the market in Belgium and neighbouring Luxembourg. Officials have warned that some of those eggs may still be present in private kitchens, meaning the recall does not automatically eliminate the risk of further infections. No deaths have been reported in the Belgian outbreak.

In Eibar, in Gipuzkoa, authorities identified 29 cases after people consumed tortillas at a hospitality establishment on August 9. Laboratory testing confirmed 21 cases, while officials classified eight as probable. Twenty-five affected people sought medical care and nine entered hospital. All hospitalized patients had already been discharged, according to the regional health authorities.

Investigators detected Salmonella Enteritidis in samples from some affected individuals. They inspected the establishment, collected samples of tortillas and eggs, reviewed food-handling practices and examined the egg supply chain. The response began after Osakidetza alerted epidemiological surveillance officials on August 11.

Officials identified several food-safety deficiencies. These included inadequate heat treatment, storage of tortillas without refrigeration, weaknesses in egg traceability, insufficient cleaning and disinfection, and the possibility of cross-contamination during food preparation. Authorities destroyed the tortillas found at the site and placed available eggs under precautionary control while they assessed the supply chain.

The distributor also faced restrictions on food distribution and marketing activity until it could demonstrate that it had an effective system for traceability and product withdrawal. Authorities ordered improvements in egg handling, utensil cleaning and separation between raw egg and ready-to-eat foods.

The Eibar incident provides a clear example of how salmonellosis can emerge without requiring a large industrial contamination event. A combination of inadequate cooking, improper storage and cross-contamination can create conditions for transmission in a single food-service setting.

Salmonellosis investigation in the United States involves jalapeño peppers

North American authorities are also tracking a significant Salmonella outbreak associated with jalapeño peppers.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 431 illnesses across 32 states as of August 19. The outbreak has caused 57 hospitalizations and no deaths. Investigators linked the infections to jalapeño peppers from Sinaloa, Mexico, distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors.

The investigation found an important restaurant connection. Of 224 patients interviewed, 203, or 91 percent, said they had eaten at a Mexican-style restaurant before becoming ill. Investigators identified 28 illness clusters involving locations associated with Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA across eight states. Patients commonly reported eating ingredients such as jalapeño peppers, red onion, cilantro and avocado.

U.S. regulators have urged consumers not to eat recalled jalapeño peppers connected to the investigation. Retailers, distributors, restaurants and food-service companies that received the affected peppers have been told not to sell, serve or use them. The FDA continues to update its outbreak investigation and recall information.

The U.S. figures also illustrate how reported outbreak totals can change rapidly.
